It’s the question people are always asking themselves.

Most of us probably feel like we are the hero because in our own minds, we are the at the center of our own stories.

But if your character was cast in a film, what would that look like? Would you be the center of the story or someone who just supports the main character?

Do you make major decisions or allow others to make them for you?

If you’re the hero, you will make decisions that affect others without necessarily knowing the end result. The sidekick will allow someone else to make the decisions but might also place the blame on the decision maker if the outcome is not good. But a true hero accepts the responsibility no matter what fate it might bring to others.

Do you dive into situations without thinking or are you the one who cautions everyone about possible peril?

I think a good example of this would be in Sherlock Holmes. Holmes is so lovable because of his recklessness. The man is an absolute mess. His sidekick, Watson, is always getting him out of trouble and is probably one of the only sensible people in his life. So if you are the person who is constantly jumping into things without thinking, you might be the hero. If you are the one who holds back and tries to bring reason and sanity to others, you might be more of a sidekick.

Do you make jokes to lighten the mood or are you constantly bringing people back to the gravity of the situation?

This is probably the most famous type of sidekick. My favorite comic relief character is from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Xander Harris always has something clever to say to lighten the fact that everybody might be facing their deaths. So if you’re always the serious one trying to convince people if you don’t act now, you might die, you’re probably the hero. If you crack jokes at inappropriate moments, you are a lovable sidekick.

After writing this, I don’t know who I would want to be. They seem to have equally admirable and flawed characteristics. So whoever you are, own it and embrace it for all of its strengths and weaknesses!

If you’re the hero, which character would you compare yourself to?  If you’re the sidekick, which movie has the best example of which kind?
