ParaNorman is a deliciously rich, handcrafted story. Its brief stint in the theater was welcomed by critics and a handful of geeks that dug its nostalgic, 80‘s quality. The story surprises with how far it goes into the cruelty of bullying, restrains itself from being constantly bouncy and cute, and takes on hard subjects without making them into weak characterizations of the real thing.

Now it’s on blu-ray and revving up for Oscar season.

Extra features on most blu-rays can feel like they’re just for filmmakers. Sometimes they’re non-existent. But it’s rare that you get both an excellent movie and extra content that is, at its core, an invitation to a geeky conversation.

I was going to write about how awful Michael Bay is, but it seems the rest of the rational world already has him pegged as the bullying, misogynistic, fan-hating, sellout that he is.

There’s not a lot more that I can add to that conversation.

As much as I want to look upon the Bay-infatuated youth of the day with disdain, I’m not entirely innocent myself. For some reason, despite the offerings of Spielberg, Cameron, Lucas, and Scott, I fell for some really terrible movies that time has mostly forgotten, films likely responsible for my own generation’s brand of narcissism: the idea that no matter how much of a nobody I am, I can grow up to be a rock star.

Here they are in all their 80’s glory:

“Which Doctor Who companion would she be?”

It was a question asked of me by a colleague regarding an actress in discussing casting for a film project. I would never have thought to ask such a question. But it was a good one.

Review: Warm Bodies

Jess Adducci —  January 14, 2013

Somehow, I’ve become “the zombie chick”. Alright, true, no one has actually called me that. But considering the glow-in-the-dark zombie play set on my wall, “A Zombie’s Guide to Zombies” on my shelf, and other zombie paraphernalia I’ve received as gifts over the years… well, I think it’s safe to assume. I don’t know when it happened. Maybe it was because I made a (horrible) zombie film in college? Is that really all it takes?

But somewhere along the trashed, postapocalyptic road, I started to really like zombies. And I started living up to my implied moniker.

When it comes to zombies in cinema, some might argue that the genre is over-saturated. But every once in a while, a gem comes out that makes the other B-movies worth sifting through. Zombieland did that. Walking Dead, venturing into the TV arena, did that. And then comes a love story about a zombie coming back to life after falling for a beautiful resistance chick. Warm Bodies.

So if you’ve been living under a rock and haven’t heard, The Hobbit is available in several different formats in theaters. Peter Jackson shot the film at a higher frame rate than the industry standard 24 fps with the idea that the image would be much clearer for the 3D experience.

I took it upon myself to test out all the versions to see which one did in fact create the most immersive experience. What I discovered was somewhat ironic.

I know that everyone has been practically soiling themselves in excitement as the opening weekend of The Hobbit draws near but I’m here to tell you a couple of excellent reasons why it would be in your best interest hold out just a bit longer. I mean really people, it’s just a movie based off one of the greatest stories ever told. It’s just been made by one of the greatest directors of our generation. It just has the wonderful Martin Freeman playing Bilbo Baggins. Meh, I say.

It’s finally here! The final installment of the Twilight Saga will be released in theaters November 16th, 2012. Breaking Dawn Pt 2 is supposed to be the epic finale we have all been waiting for but for those of us who remember the end of the book would not exactly describe it as epic. Basically the bad guys show up to kill the good guys, they talk it out, settle their differences, and then just go home. The end. Yea, you don’t get a spoiler alert here. If you haven’t read the book it’s your own fault.

So for those of you that have already begun lining up at the theater to get your tickets or for those who just want a good laugh, here are my top 4 1/2 favorite Twilight spoofs for your viewing pleasure.

It never fails. A seriously awesome tv show hits, the world loves it, and then they make a spin-off and it ruins everything. It could be a money-making gimmick, or maybe someone seriously thinks it’s worthwhile to develop the world of the show more deeply.

Either way, it doesn’t matter because they are never as good as the original, and they usually end up taking away from the main story. Let’s look at some examples. Continue Reading…

I’m a geek. I’ve learned not only to accept that but also be proud of it. Who cares if people think you’re crazy for getting “too into sci-fi/fantasy stuff?” It’s so much more fun to be dorky than it is to be cool.

So I’ve compiled a very short list of some geeky characteristics, and it is my hope that fellow geeks will add to the list. Be geeky and proud!

So you know you’re a geek if…
