Kristen Stewart. I Want to Like Her, But…

OK, so I just saw the full trailer for Snow White and the Huntsman, and at first glance it looks great! I would typically be really excited about this film, but Kristen Stewart is playing Snow White. I just don’t understand what Hollywood sees in this girl. I get that she is stunningly beautiful and thin, which is all you really need nowadays to make a name for yourself, but she is not leading lady material.

Now, I am sure off-camera she is a wonderful person. She’s driven and very focused. I also think that her natural awkwardness is endearing, but what I think a great actor should have is a very strong and wide emotional range, and she just doesn’t have it.

There is no comparison

I’ve seen all the Twilights…so far (seriously, make it stop already!), and I understand why they hired her on the first one. She’s young and clumsy and she definitely looked the part, but as the story progressed, Kristen was not able to capture the intense emotions that the story required.

I’ve been hearing her compared to Jennifer Lawrence, who plays Katniss in the Hunger Games, and I think this is absurd. There is no comparison! Jennifer Lawrence’s performance was fantastic. I believed in her devotion to her sister, her fear just before going into the games, and her devastation when Rue died. She sold it, and I bought it! Kristen would not have been able to pull that off.

Benefit of the Doubt

Now, here’s the part where I try to make nice with K-Stew. Like I said, she is stunning. I mean seriously, I want her face. I have seen her grow through the Twilight Series and I actually thought she was pretty good in The Runaways. She was awful in Adventureland, but what I am saying is that I see potential. She’s getting better.

I want to believe she can play Snow White in Snow White and the Huntsman. I think this is going to be an awesome take on the classic story, and visually it looks gorgeous. I just worry she will be as flat and emotionless as she is in every other role she’s played.

But, I will be giving her the benefit of the doubt because I really do want to like her.
