As you know by now from reading my blogs I’m a big reader. If you didn’t know that I am a big reader then you haven’t been reading my blogs and you should… because I’m awesome. Ya know what else is awesome? New authors.
The reason they are so awesome is because they are so accessible in this stage of their careers, which makes them easy to connect with. You share in their triumphs and struggles as they write. You see their potential from the very start and get to say “I knew them when” as they make it big.
I knew this author when. Way back when. As a kid she taught me a super fancy way of eating ice cream, and now she is a super fancy author of a pretty incredible fantasy novel. I could not be more excited to introduce to you my cousin, Cameo Renae.
Since she is my cousin I don’t want this review to sound biased, so I promise to be as honest as possible.
Cameo’s second novel has just been published through Crushing Hearts and Black Butterfly Publishing. It’s entitled Hidden Wings and it is set to be released January 31, 2013. I cannot wait to read it!
To hold us over until then is her debut novel called In My Dreams. It’s a story about 17-year-old Elizabeth “Lizzy” Hayes. She has had a pretty complicated life, but through it all stood the love of her life Michael Young. This is no ordinary love story though. Lizzy has a gift…or is it a curse?
I don’t want to give away too much of the plot because I would rather you go out and read the book for yourselves. I will however say that I feel like it is a cross between Twilight (sans sparkly veggie vamps) and The Lovely Bones (sans dead little girls).
The world Cameo creates is beautiful. She drew her inspiration for the settings from real life which really allowed me to connect with this story. Both of us grew up in Hawaii so her descriptions of the islands are beautifully detailed which made me totally homesick. Thanks for that Cam.
Then there are the darker moments. From the brokeness and alcoholism of Lizzy’s family which I can totally relate to (seriously had me crying) to the evil turn the story takes is sure to keep you on edge.
While it is evident that Cameo is a new author (there are some rookie mistakes) she is able to write in such a way that you can’t help but feel every emotion the characters are feeling. She makes you care about them, and that to me is a sign of a great author.
In My Dreams is a roller coaster full of deepest sadness and overwhelming joy. One thing is for certain, it is one wild ride!
“I will be with you and there is nothing… in heaven or hell, that can keep me away.” -Michael (In My Dreams)
Now go out and buy this book!
