Yup! We produced a book trailer. Crazy, right? Well, when we screened Avarice at UtopYA Con this summer we bumped into author Inger Iversen and saw a great win-win opportunity for both of us. The resulting cross-mojo-magic is the book trailer you see before you now. Check it out and read on for more behind the scenes tidbits.

Holey moley! The Timid Monster team just got back from Nashville where we screened Avarice at the 2013 UtopYA con, a convention exclusively for female authors of young adult sci-fi/fantasy books (think Twilight and Hunger Games).

We knew going in it wouldn’t be as big as some of the other events we’ve been to, but what we weren’t expecting is the level of awesome we found in the authors present. Every single one of them was a humble, hard-working, ridiculously talented author, many of whom did their own graphic design and book trailers.

We wanted to do something special to celebrate all the talent and creativity, so we decided to hold a “Judge a Book by Its Cover” contest. We snapped photos of all the best book covers we could find and we’re turning the judging over to you, dear readers. Just jump on our UtopYA Photo Album on Facebook and “like” all your favorite covers.

The author whose book cover gets the most likes by Wednesday, July 3rd at 11:59 pm central wins a Timid Monster prize package and internet fame.

So get to it! The clock’s-a-tickin’!

We were in Batesville, Arkansas this past weekend for Pulp Ark, a great pulp fiction con that pulled together a lot of great authors and friends from other cons. We somehow showed up for the one slow afternoon at Pulp Ark, so we decided to have some fun.

Hats off to Tommy Hancock for putting together a great con. We look forward to next year’s!

With all these young adult books now being made into movies, I think it should be a rule that you must read the book before seeing the film. Everyone knows the books will always be better than the movie, so why would you want to hear the story from the filmmaker instead of the person who actually wrote it? Continue Reading…

So, I’ve read that the The Hunger Games franchise is slated to be the next Twilight and my first thought was “oh please God noooooo!” The last thing the world needs is another Twilight and I’m speaking as a fan. I devoured the Twilight series and fell in love with the characters just like everyone else, and like everyone else I could not wait to see my favorite characters come to life on the big screen.

The problem I have with the films however is that not only did they take some serious liberties with the story, they also hired the cast solely based on how pretty they are to look at and not how well they could play the part. This is my fear for The Hunger Games. I’m an even bigger fan of The Hunger Games than I was of Twilight.

I worry the upcoming film will not hold true to the book so here are the top 3 ways the movie will ruin the books: Continue Reading…
