Archives For Lord of the Rings

Since I was younger, I have had the ability (or perhaps the curse) to get completely lost inside a story. At the time, I didn’t realize that not everyone could do this. Not everyone can suspend reality long enough to be completely immersed inside a world that isn’t theirs.

So I didn’t understand why I felt so miserable after watching or reading something that I loved so dearly. Everyone else seemed like they could just enjoy it and then get back to their regular lives. So why couldn’t I?

It’s not something that a person would normally talk about. It sounds stupid to say that you’re depressed because the world you’ve just left isn’t real and the characters that you’ve spent so much time with don’t actually exist. You’re unhappy because reality isn’t like the movies or a TV show? Sounds a bit silly to you probably.

But it’s not silly at all. It’s something real that a lot of people face. And it’s very dangerous.

Have you ever gone to the theater to watch a movie and there is that one moment where everyone simultaneously has their minds blown? I love those moments. It’s so much fun to watch a film so amazing, or epic, or funny that you all experience that collective shock, fear, anger, or triumph at the same time. It’s sad that it is such a rare thing.

Here is my list of movies in no particular order that have given me that experience. These are moments that do not have the same effect at home as they do in the theater. You have to be there. It’s a moment that connects us as fans in perfect unison. They may not all be great movies but they gave me some of the most memorable experiences I’ve ever had in a theater and for that, I thank them!

I once thought that there could never be too much fantasy in a movie, but I’m really starting to think twice about that. It’s becoming a bit too common for movies to be all about the special effects. That’s been happening for a while now, so no surprise there. However, some of the fantasy movies that are coming out today look like the entire movie was shot on green screen.

I have a problem with that for a few reasons.

I desperately want to live in a world where impossible dreams can come true. And the more I live in this world, the more I believe that it is entirely possible. I have been reading Michael Hyatt’s book, Platform: Get Noticed in a Noisy World, and he talks about how writing down your dreams will turn them into goals. And people who write them down are more likely to accomplish their goals.

I’m a list maker by nature. I even have lists for my lists. People have made fun of me for it my entire life, but it’s the only way I ever remember anything or get anything done.

Since I was twelve years old I have been writing down my dreams, and after reading Michael Hyatt’s book, I realized how powerful that statement actually was because many of the dreams I thought were impossible have actually come true for me.

I’m a geek. I’ve learned not only to accept that but also be proud of it. Who cares if people think you’re crazy for getting “too into sci-fi/fantasy stuff?” It’s so much more fun to be dorky than it is to be cool.

So I’ve compiled a very short list of some geeky characteristics, and it is my hope that fellow geeks will add to the list. Be geeky and proud!

So you know you’re a geek if…

So the whole world knows at this point that The Hobbit is going to made into a trilogy since Peter Jackson’s announcement on Monday July 30, 2012. And of course like anything happening in the film industry, there have been mixed reactions to this decision.

Personally, I’m more than thrilled because it means more story and character development. Tolkien had so much history written about these characters, and even the extended version of Lord of the Rings couldn’t cover all of it. I think this is a great opportunity to deeper explore Middle Earth. Continue Reading…

I’m honestly really surprised John Carter didn’t do better than it did. It had everything that a good sci-fi/fantasy movie should have. Plus, the books, written in 1912, contained the richness that could have made this movie as cinematically thrilling as Lord of the Rings.

Yet, the movie bombed at the box office. Lack of marketing was probably a huge factor, but the other problem was the majority of people didn’t know who John Carter was, and the title definitely didn’t help matters.

When I first heard that title, I thought it was going to be some boring political movie about some guy named John Carter. I had no idea that it was going to be a space adventure. If they had used the full title, John Carter of Mars, I think it would have attracted more of a crowd. Continue Reading…

Have you ever been introduced to a celebrity and found that there is a very thin line between being a fan and being a stalker? Well, I have. And I’m not really sure how it happened.

I’ve recently been introduced to the world of comic conventions where we have been going to promote our films, and I have gotten to know a lot of really interesting people there, most of whom are super awesome fans of the fantasy/science fiction world. So I am hoping that my experience will fall on understanding ears. Or maybe the world will forever think I’m insane.

Not sure which one… Continue Reading…

Have you ever watched a film and felt a drive to do something more with your life? Something unexpected and completely out of the ordinary that would forever change your life and your outlook on the world? I think tons of people feel that way after watching epic movies in which the characters go on some kind of journey or adventure that tests them and reveals who they are at their very core.

So why not make that kind of experience a reality in your own life? Why not pick up and take an epic journey somewhere and just see what happens? I felt the same pull and drive to do just that, and somewhere inside me I found the courage to make it happen. These are some suggestions I would make to anyone wanting to take their own adventure.
