The 12th Doctor: Who’s the Next Doctor Who?

Katie Baker —  September 5, 2012

The 7th season of Dr. Who just began and I could not be more excited. I love this show. If you haven’t seen it then I’m going to have to ask you to crawl out from under that rock you’ve been living under and go find a television. This is the very definition of must see TV!

I have heard rumors though (don’t worry, no spoilers here). The rumor is that this is Matt Smith’s last season, which means it’s time to find the next Doctor. So who’s it gonna be? Below are my top 5 potential Doctors in no particular order:

Henry Ian Cusick

Henry Ian Cusick as the 12th Doctor Who

You may know him as Desmond Hume from Lost. I am just about finished with my 2 month-long Lost marathon and I gotta tell ya, it’s driving me crazy! I can’t wait to be free from The Island. I am however, going to miss my favorite character: Desmond. He is funny and brilliant with a gorgeous Scottish accent and a fantastic smile. All these things make for a great Doctor in my mind.

James McAvoy

James McAvoy as the 12th Doctor Who

Ok ok, I know that James is far to big an actor to ever want to become Dr. Who, but he would be so amazing! If you’ve seen any of his work you know what a brilliant actor he is. If you’ve seen any of his late night interviews you know how hysterical and charming he is. Seriously, YouTube James McAvoy on Craig Ferguson. They are the funniest interviews I’ve ever seen.

James and/or Oliver Phelps

James & Oliver Phelps as the 12th Doctor Who

You would know them as the Weasley twins from the Harry Potter series. They are obviously hilarious and so clever. I would love to see them (or at least one of them) in another role. The Doctor has always wanted to be a Ginger and I think there is no better ginger choice than a Weasley.

Michael Sheen

Michael Sheen as the 12th Doctor Who

Sheen is one of my very favorite British actors. He’s not very big in the states yet but you would recognize him as Wesley from 30 Rock, or for you tweenies, Aro from Twilight. He is the closest you can get to the perfect Doctor without bringing back the legendary David Tenant.

On second thought, just bring David back!

Who would you like to see as the next Doctor Who?

  • Rachel Taylor

My vote would be Henry Ian Cusick. He did all that time traveling in Lost, and I think he is good at convincing people the world is about to end. James McAvoy is my favorite actor in the world, but I think he has gotten too big for Dr. Who.

    • Dan Baker

      Jeremy Clarkson FTW!!!

    Hugh Laurie

    • Dan Baker

      Ha! That would be awesome.

  • Kaz Duston McGown

Jason Statham or time for a foreign doctor Brent Spiner.

    • Katie

Jason Statham is too hard core. I like my doctors a bit wobbly. I think Rupert Grint would be an excellent choice.

      • Reuben Hendy

        Rupert Grint FTW!

        • Katie

          I SUPPORT THIS!!!

  • Gyt

    benedict cumberbatch

    • Dan Baker

      I could get behind that.

    • Katie

No way! That would mean taking him away from Sherlock!!

  • Cooldudey

Reuben Hendy might be a awesome choice!

      Who’s Reuben Hendy?

      • That Drama Fan

This really cool up and coming actor, who takes everything in his path, makes it dramatic and intense, and delivers drama in every role! He is amazing, and my favourite actor, even though not many people know him. He is in lots of plays, was on The One Show once and lots other things! He is great!

        • Katie

I’ll definitely have to check him out!!

        • Reuben Hendy

Thank you very much, i am very pleased that you take my work in such a nice way! :)

      • Reuben Hendy

        I am. lol

        • Katie

Oh hey, Reuben! I hear you would make a great Doctor! Are you thinking about auditioning? I think you would be fantastic!

          • Reuben Hendy

Sorry, but I think I’ll leave it to the pros this time. As Drama Guy mentioned, I only do small things, and although I would love to move on to something bigger, I’ll take each thing as it comes.

  • Ruben Reveles

The 50th Anniversary Doctor should be female

    • Katie

I wrote an article on who I think would make a suitable female Doctor but at the risk of disparaging my entire sex, I don’t think I would enjoy a female Doctor.

    what about Orlando Bloom?

    • Katie

See, here’s my problem with Orlando. He’s pretty but I don’t see him as clever or charming enough to be the Doctor. He would be fun to watch every week though! Good call on Orlando.

Moss!!! Excellent choice!!! How could I have left him off this list?!

  • #yoloswag

The guy who played neville in harry potter!!!!!!

    • Katie

Matthew Lewis is a fantastic choice!! How did I not think of him. I would love to see in play someone other than Neville. He’s not ginger though and I really want the next Doctor to be ginger. I think Rupert Everett needs to be the one.
