Have you ever gone to the theater to watch a movie and there is that one moment where everyone simultaneously has their minds blown? I love those moments. It’s so much fun to watch a film so amazing, or epic, or funny that you all experience that collective shock, fear, anger, or triumph at the same time. It’s sad that it is such a rare thing.
Here is my list of movies in no particular order that have given me that experience. These are moments that do not have the same effect at home as they do in the theater. You have to be there. It’s a moment that connects us as fans in perfect unison. They may not all be great movies but they gave me some of the most memorable experiences I’ve ever had in a theater and for that, I thank them!
The moment: Will the top fall?
This one is my all time favorite. You could just tell everyone is the theater was thinking the same thing, “drop, drop, drop.” The camera holds on that spinning top for so long then just as the top twitches it cuts to black. The whole theater just erupted. Man, that was fun!
The moment: Hulk vs Loki
This whole movie was so much fun to watch in the theater. Everyone was into it and cheering as they should but no one saw this coming. We all just thought “oh here we go, another monologue from Loki.” We all just burst into the most hysterical laughter I’ve ever heard come from a full theater! We laughed so long and so hard it wasn’t until the 3rd time I saw it that weekend that I finally heard the “puny god.”
Breaking Dawn Pt. 2
The moment: The death of Carlisle Cullen
Okay, try to ignore the poor quality of this video. It matches the poor quality of the entire film. I know this so try not to judge me too hard. I am fully aware that these movies are terrible in every way. The books weren’t even that great but I jumped on the Twilight bandwagon from the very start so I became invested. I cared about the characters.. well not so much Bella.
Anywhoo, watching this in the theater was a whole lot of boring. It was however completely redeemed in this moment. The entire theater gasped at the exact same time. There were even a few “what the F is happening?” and “that wasn’t in the book!” It was awesome! It was a cheap trick by director Bill Condon but it was fun!
The Lord of the Rings
The moment: “If you want him, come and claim him!”
Arwen is so kind, soft, and beautiful that you just had no idea of the level of bad-assery she is capable of. During the whole movie we were all so lost in the story that the theater was silent until Arwen says those words. In that instant all of us did little fist pumps and cheered her on. Yea, bring it on Ringwraiths! To this day whenever I watch that scene I give Arwen a pretend high five. Atta Girl!
The thing that makes me the most sad is that I will never have that experience with these movies again because I know what is going to happen. I still love these movies and will watch them again but the moment has passed and all that is left are the memories. It is these moments that continue to draw me to the theater despite the high cost, inconvenience, and rude people.
