Let me begin by saying that I have no desire to cut down other Doctors. Everybody has a favorite, and that’s one of the beautiful things about the show. There’s a Doctor for everyone, and each actor portrays him a little differently, allowing us to see different aspects of this alien’s personality.
That being said, David Tennant is MY favorite Doctor. I do not want to persuade someone to give up their beloved favorite, so I am not trying to convince anyone that he is the best. For those of you who already think that he is, join me in discovering why his is the face we think of when we think of Doctor Who.
I’ve heard people say that you never forget your first Doctor. Well, my first Doctor was actually Christopher Eccleston, and while I really liked him a lot in the role, he flew off my radar the minute David Tennant stepped into the picture.
His energy and boyish charm are addictive, and David Tennant’s version of the Doctor is how I fell in love with the show. So what is it about him that is so good?
Wide Emotional Range
David Tennant is considered to be the most human of the Doctors. Most people think this is a reason why he was so convincing and others think it’s not true to Doctor Who because he is supposed to be more alien in personality.
Personally, I think having a Doctor for a couple of seasons who is more in touch with his human side is a good thing. There has to be something in a character that people can relate to; it’s a reflection that allows them to identify in some way. While it may not be necessary for the Doctor to always be in touch with his human-like emotions, it’s a bit refreshing to get to see a Doctor that does have that.
When he’s angry, he can really let loose. It has to be really hard to convince people it’s the end of the world on a weekly basis. Having to jump from that to light-hearted comedy every week takes some talent.
Also, his pain was so accessible through David Tennant. This is a character who travels alone throughout time, never aging and always leaving behind companions. He is utterly alone, and that is evident with David Tennant. He really brought out the sadness of his loneliness, and that is something I think the fans can identify with.
Easy to Fall in Love With
Since establishing the fact that he was very in touch with his emotional side, it doesn’t seem ridiculous to say that he is one of the more sensitive Doctors. And that appeals to the female fans for sure. He had this magical way of coming across as someone open to love but unavailable at the same time. He was right there in front of you, but just out of reach at the same time.
I’d be curious to see if the percentage of women watching the show went up during David Tennant’s reign as the Doctor. Those quirky suits and the glasses are enough to make any girl’s heart skip a beat.
Fulfilling a Dream
David Tennant was 3 years old when he saw Doctor Who for the first time, and that was the reason he wanted to become an actor. To be able to fulfill a childhood dream of playing a character must be one of the most incredible experiences, and his passion for the show is probably one of the reasons he is so amazing in the role.
Bottom line is that David Tennant is a fan of the show. He wasn’t just an actor looking for a role. He poured not only his passion for it into the character but also his extensive knowledge about the show’s history. It’s true that he is an amazing actor and really attractive, but it’s his passion behind all of this that makes him the best.
Is David Tennant the best Doctor Who? What about David Tennant makes him the best?
